Commentary

This song was the standard closing to Glee Club concerts in the 60s when I was an active member.  It was usually followed by an abreviated version of the “Battle Hymn” starting with “in the beauty of the Lillies, etc”.  One of the concerts in 1964 was a political dinner in a small town in Indiana.  For this concert, Al added the name “Dwight D. Eisenhower” to the narration.  Ike was at the dinner and when he heard his name, the turned around with a great big grin.

I was the narrator for this piece from 1962-65. I’ve never heard this.

My first performance of “I am the Nation” was in September of 1962 at a Republican fundraiser. We were on stage in a cornfield in Indiana, and Eisenhower was there to raise money.  ‘I am the Nation” was always performed at the end of concerts.

I am deeply grateful to the person who found this tape. I performed it a few hundred times, but I think this one was our final concert in 1965.
