Joey Martin’s journey into Purdue’s Glee Club reflects both his family’s influence and his love for singing, honed through high school and FFA performances. Although he had no direct Glee Club experience before college, Joey decided to audition, encouraged by his background in various choirs. The audition process was unexpected, including formal interviews that felt like job interviews, which made it both unique and intimidating. He performed several pieces, including “Vittoria, mio core” and “Mr. Cellophane.” Despite feeling uncertain about the competitive environment, he received confirmation of his acceptance during a busy period, soon after returning from a trip to Europe.

Joining the Glee Club, Joey experienced a rigorous and close-knit environment that emphasized learning names and traditions, such as table songs and “runout” solos. He recalls the challenges of remembering everyone’s names and the intimidating presence of older members, who made him feel like he was part of something remarkable and demanding. Joey also valued the camaraderie formed through unique experiences, from social events to intense rehearsals and large performances. He encourages others to join, describing the Glee Club as one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences, likening it to his transformative time as an FFA state officer.
