Beta Testers, comment here!
Beta Testers,
Thanks for your willingness to help with this project. Please use this blog post to submit comments, bug reports, and general feedback.
Commentary
I’m aware that the Comment “submit” function (button below) at times takes you to a Thank You page that tells you you’ll be redirected. It doesn’t always work, but the comments are submitted.

The Upload feature for submitting songs is available in the Songs section. (Already have some feedback that this was unclear)

I tried to login with the default username and pw listed in the video, but got ‘The existing username and/or password you submitted are not valid’

Paul,
My fault for rushing out a beta. (wait, isn’t that what a beta is?)
You don’t really need a password anymore for reviewing the site - it was causing too many barriers.
The editor/editor2021 account, though, can be used to test the editing features.
I DO see that you registered a new account, which is great.

Logged in using Gmail credentials. Then tried to add tags to “All Of You/All of Me, it took me back to a login screen…..but no option of logging in through Google. I have screenshots if that helps.

Went to edit profile to try to change password and got some funky stuff like a screen that said, “No matching hash algorithm when I clicked “submit”

Hmm - yeah screenshots would help.
If you sign up via Gmail, you might not “need” a password since Gmail is the means by which you are authenticated. I’ll check on that.

Problem is when I login using gmail to authenticate, it doesn’t let me do anything.I created another account without using Gmail and everything runs well.

Just a suggestion but if you are going to allow people to use avatars, most aren’t going to take the time to change their size to be compliant with 300 px. I was wondering if there was some sort of open source tool that would allow them to size it when uploading it into the site.

when searching can we add sort options. ie. searching by End of Season concerts, and further sort results by year or director, etc…
Also, under the play button on the songs there is a download option. Will this pose a copyright issue?

Holy Art Thou (rec. 1948) won’t play - looks like an error w/ the uploaded file

Man, I would like to listen to some of these complete concerts (1958 Gala Concert) without triggering every track.

The Contact page description still has the latin/jibberish filler words, and lots of food items. Apparently you were hungry when setting this up Paul, go get a snack.

ditto Rich’s comment earlier - Google login = not helpful.
While registering, it would not let me register with the same email that I had entered in this comment section. Had to use a second email address.

“Logged in using Gmail credentials. Then tried to add tags to “All Of You/All of Me, it took me back to a login screen…..but no option of logging in through Google. I have screenshots if that helps.”
@Rich: This is actually by design. When you register, you are a “Member,” but one needs Editor account status to have the necessary privileges to edit tags, etc. We can adjust this - I didn’t want editor access to be too widespread, because a spammer could then register for an account then wreck all of the content.

Thursday fixes.
@timeldridge “Holy Art Thou (rec. 1948) won’t play - looks like an error w/ the uploaded file”
Fixed!
“Also, under the play button on the songs there is a download option. Will this pose a copyright issue?”
Time will tell. Some of the songs would be public domain.
“when searching can we add sort options. ie. searching by End of Season concerts, and further sort results by year or director, etc… “
This already exists when you are on the search results page. There are multiple filters you can apply.
“Category 1970s. Brothers In Song Vinyl, 1973 First Nighter, and EOS 1973 are broken.”
fixed

The ability to widely allow users editing capability is pretty key to the “wiki” ethos. Perhaps restricting to “verified” or higher level users to limit the possibility of scammers and bots wreaking havoc. (ie. just to post this bug, I had to log out from editor and in as myself…)
When logged in as editor and trying to tag a file (add soloist name), I get form errors that keep the tag edit from posting. This occurred with a couple different tracks (Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Aint necessarily so) in the 1958 Gala Concert collection
“The form you submitted contained the following errors
Song Audio: There was a problem with one or more Grid fields
song_audio: There was a problem with one or more Grid fields”

@timEldridge: Regarding edit:
* The Tim Eldridge account is now an editor. So, you can skip the editor/editor2021 account for now.
* Humor me and try another ‘Edit’, please.
* I think very basic, human-vetted authentication is the best way to award Editor accounts. If nothing else to prevent spammers wreaking havoc. e.g. email us and tell us the name of Purdue’s Fight Song would be the criteria =)
Bigger picture, thanks to your collective feedback, I need to make it plain when ‘Editor’ account access is needed.
It’s possible Rich, or both of you, tried to edit something, and got a login prompt. But the login prompt wasn’t actually showing because you weren’t logged in, it was showing because the system (failed) in clarifying: “hey, you can’t do this without being an editor. So, go ahead and login as an editor.”
I bet that played a part, I hope, in the problem of re-registering.
I mean, it’s half bug, half messaging. I’ll make the Editor access level warning much more gentle and clear.

When I try to upload songs, I get an ‘URL Title’ error saying that I have to have a unique URL Title to be able to upload, but I do not see where I enter a URL.

Hi Paul. Just checking to see if I can comment. Also, I’d like to upload FLAC (lossless). Is that a problem?
Paul R
on 7/30/2021
Paul,
Your commenting seems to work fine. Are you finding otherwise?
FLAC. Give it a try: I might have to tune the web server to accept it but we will see.
Paul L.
on 7/31/2021
Yes., Commenting seems to work now. I uploaded some FLACs tonight, so you can if they work okay. Not sure is the extra fidelity is helpful or not since I record from DAT to cassette tape, I figure why not for posterity’s sake.
Also, the close link after uploading links to the contact page instead of just closing the box.

I think Stag Night should be an additional category. Other genres to add include instrumental and original composition. It would nice if we could include punctuation in the notable personnel to indicate what instrument someone was playing. For example: Paul Larson (kazoo)
Paul R
on 8/5/2021
Paul,
Those are great ideas. I’ve encountered 60s era Stag nights in the yet-to-be-split category of reel to reels.
I like you (kazoo) example. I think the technical issue there, that particular data element is a “Tag,” which just happens to be punctuation-free by design. But that doesn’t negate your idea; I just have to ponder it. I have a related idea that will be easy to add, which is a song subtitle.
Example: there are dozens of Ave Marias, Spirit Immortals, etc. In terms of search, results for “Ave Maria” are confusing because there are Biebel, Arcadelt, Bach versions. But I also don’t think “Ave Maria Biebel” should be the title. I’ll add the subtitle right now and maybe it’ll help me solve the kazoo riddle.
Do I need to learn the kazoo now?
Paul L.
on 8/6/2021
@PaulR:
Stag Night is now a category (Performance Type), as well as Instrumental (genre).
Paul L.

@PaulL:
Many, if not all, of the songs I submitted have a problem playing at the beginning. They play a second or so, pause, and then start again. Not sure if this is an issue with FLAC or something else.
Paul R
on 8/9/2021
iPhone or Android? All your uploads have been fine for me.
Paul L.
on 8/9/2021
It must be my machine or browser. I guess I’m old school in that I still use a PC for any serious browsing or anything that requires a lot of input.
Paul R
on 8/23/2021
Is it sporadic? Do songs work most of the time? Because as you mention it, I have encountered random recordings that will play on my desktop but not my phone. When I re-save the audio, even in the same format, it often fixes it.
Paul L.
on 8/23/2021
I’m still having problems doing anything but listening (can’t volunteer). Now when I click on upload, I get and error 404. Is it just me? Do I need a new login?
Paul R
on 2/11/2023
It’s not you! I think recent upgrades of the software broke a few things on the volunteer side. And I haven’t given this enough attention. I’m not really sure why it is to the extent that you’re noticing, but it’s on my list to fix. Sorry about that!
